The O-1 visa is a non-immigrant U.S. visa for people who possess extraordinary ability or achievement in their field and are coming to the U.S. temporarily to work in that field.

You must show extraordinary ability, proven by:

  • National or international recognition

  • A record of major achievements

  • Critical acclaim or media attention

  • Key roles at distinguished organizations or productions

O-1A – For individuals with extraordinary ability in:

  • Sciences
  • Education
  • Business
  • Athletics
    •  

O-1B – For individuals with extraordinary ability in:

  • Arts
  • Television
  • Motion pictures
  • Major national or international awards (e.g., Nobel Prize, Emmy, Grammy)

  • Published work about you in professional or major media

  • High salary compared to others in your field

  • Membership in exclusive associations

  • Critical roles in successful projects or companies

  • Letters of recommendation from experts

 You don’t need all of these—usually 3 strong types of evidence are enough if no major award is held.

  • Initial stay: Up to 3 years

  • Extensions: In 1-year increments if the project continues

  • No limit on number of extensions

  • You don’t have verifiable achievements or evidence of national/international recognition

  • You're trying to work outside your field of ability

  • You can’t provide detailed documentation or a U.S. petitioner
